Repairing Small Cracks & Painting a Wood Front Door
Door Restoration in Houston
Your front door is the first thing visitors see, so you want it to make a good impression. Small cracks can cause the door look old and worn, but a good wood filler will take care of the problem efficiently. Once the repairs have been made, rejuvenate the door with a fresh coat of latex acrylic paint. Use interior paint on the inside, or exterior paint on the outside for maximum protection against the elements.
-
Slide a piece of cardboard or masking paper under the door to protect the floor from paint drips.
-
Remove the hardware and kick plate from the door, using a screwdriver.
-
Apply a mildewcide cleaner to mildew. Wash the door with soapy water and allow it to dry completely.
-
Mask the hinges and the rubber weatherstrip seal on the bottom of the door, using painter's tape. Mask the peephole, the door knocker and the perimeter of glass panes with tape. Cover everything that you don't want painted.
-
Reove any flaking paint with a putty knife. Sand and smooth the door with a fine-grit sanding pad. Wipe the sanding dust with a clean, damp cloth.
-
Mix the epoxy wood filler and hardener together, per the manufacturer's instructions. Don't mix too much because the filler cures and hardens quickly.
-
Apply a layer of wood filler to the cracks in the door, using the putty knife. Press the filler into the cracks to ensure that they are completely filled. Overfill the cracks slightly to provide enough material for sanding. Allow the filler to cure for the amount of time recommended by the manufacturer.
-
Trim the excess filler, using a utility knife. Don't trim the material flat to the door; leave enough material to sand.
-
Sand the patches smooth to the surface of the door, using the fine-grit sanding pad. Wipe the sanding dust with a clean, damp cloth. Apply more filler to recessed areas and repeat the process.
-
Apply a smooth bead of painter's caulk to seams around panels or window panes, using a caulking gun. Smooth the caulk with your finger. Remove excess caulk with a clean, damp cloth and allow it to dry completely.
-
Stir a can of latex acrylic paint with a paint stick, to mix the color pigments evenly. Slide a 6-inch synthetic mini roller cover onto a roller handle. Insert a pan liner into a paint pan and fill the pan with paint.
-
Submerge the roller in the paint and roll it back and forth over the grid lines to load it evenly with paint. Cut in around the hinges with the tip of the roller, or a 2-inch tapered paintbrush. Use the tip of the roller, or the brush, to trim around the perimeters of recessed panel doors. Smooth out thick lines and drips with the roller.
-
Roll the paint onto the centers of recessed panels first. Begin in the center of the door and work out, moving to the larger areas of the door last. Make sure to roll the edge of the door and wipe the excess paint from the opposite side with a clean, damp cloth. Continue in this manner until the door has been completed. Leave the door open to prevent it from sticking to the door frame, and allow it to dry for the amount of time recommended by the manufacturer.
-
Apply a second coat of paint in the same manner and allow it to dry completely before replacing the hardware and kick plate. Multiple coats of paint can be applied until you reach adequate coverage.
